The legend tells that in 1670 the Benedictine monk Dom Pierre Pérignon from Reims, in the French region of Champagne, discovered in a kind of accidental way, the sparkling wine worldwide known with the name of that region and as Cava, when it is produced in Catalonia.

The problem was the way to cover up the bottles preserving the carbon dioxide produced by the fermentation. It was solved when discovering a new type of cap that he saw that it was used to cover up the canteens of some pilgrims from Sant Feliu de Guíxols. And it was the corkstopper

In 1869, Ramón Gay Brugada opened a small family shop making artisan cork stoppers in Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

In 1923, his son, Román Gay Codina, opened a small factory which employed 5 people.

In 1947, Maria Gay Jené and Narcís Buscarons Vidal founded the BUSCARONS-GAY
company, automating the manufacturing, expanding the facility, and employing 14 people.

Between 1965 to 1985, the activity was moved to 2000 m2 to 4000 m2 facilities and thenumber of employees was increased to 40.

In 1988, the company Mundial Cork, S.A. was founded.

In 1999, the production was expanded again to a 12.500 m2 facility in Sant Feliu de
Guíxols.

In 2003, Mundial Cork acquired new production facilities which made it possible for them to substantially increase their production capacity.

Since 2002, Mundial Cork has had an agreement with the University of Girona to host R&D and innovation internships.

The Present
Nowadays, Mundial Cork has an annual production capacity of more than 300 million
